Note for "Type of Dancing": A Square Dance formation features four couples, who initially face each other across the sides of a square. The learning sequence for Square Dancing is Basic, Mainstream, Plus, Advanced (A1, then A2), and Challenge (C1, then C2, and up to C4).
Round Dancing is essentially cued ballroom dancing. Couples are arranged around a circle to minimize unintentional encounters. The learning sequence for Round Dancing begins at Phase I and continues through Phase II, Phase III, Phase IV, Phase V, and Phase VI. Most Round Dances used at Nova Scotian Square Dances are at the Phase II level.
Contra dances are formations of parallel, facing lines. Usually one line comprises men and the other women ("proper" formation) or men and women alternate in each line and face the opposite sex ("improper" formation). Some Contra Dance moves are similar to those of Square Dancing.
